Bake sale hosted by Avni and Shraya with the help of their community for Feeding Hope program

Updated: Sep 6

Hunger remains one of the most common challenges facing our world today, impacting millions of lives daily. Stepping up and supporting this cause can create a huge impact on countries and the people in our world.

Our Story for Feeding Hope:

We, Shraya Ved and Avni Patel, are youth volunteers at VTSEVA Detroit Youth Board.

The "Feeding Hope" Program at VT Seva provides the children of Nethra Vidyalaya schools, colleges, and tribal schools with nourishment and special meals sponsored by generous people.

This is a great initiative to provide the students of Nethra Vidyalaya with healthy meals. We are dedicated to contributing to this noble cause and helping the world in our own little way, so we started our initiative to do a bake sale, on July 13th 2024, in our subdivision and raise funds.

Goal:

We started off by setting a goal of $400s, to be able to provide a minimum of 3 meals each for 3 days.

Reach:

We spread the word of the bake sale through friends, family, different neighborhoods in Canton (that is where the bake sale was), Social Media posts etc and also did some door to door sales at the end of the event.

Process:

At our home, we baked goodies like chocolate chip muffins, blueberry muffins, brownies, cupcakes, chocolate chip cookies and made fresh lemonade. On July 13th in our subdivision, with the help of our parents we set up a tent and arranged the items to be sold. We spent 5hrs from 1pm till 6pm doing the sales. It was fun interacting with the customers and giving them insight into this wonderful Feeding Hope Program.

Accomplishment:

With all the sales and donations, we were able to raise $916 from this bake sale and far exceeded our expectations, allowing us to provide meals for 7 days for the underprivileged and visually challenged children at the Nethra Vidyalaya school in India.

Avni’s Reflections:

Me and Shraya Ved had a bake sale to help raise money for the VT Seva Feeding Hope program. Selling these products we earned around $916.00 during our event.

This was an amazing and inspiring experience. It let me see the reality of our society and let me get the experience to be a part of helping the people in it. This is an incredible opportunity and the more people that we take part in it the more we can help out our world! A world without hunger can impact our economics, health, education, and development as a society all in positive ways. Stepping up and supporting this cause can create a huge impact on countries and the people in our world.

Shraya’s  Reflections:

This being our first bake sale, we had a few trial and errors while baking.

The bake sale has been a very humbling and rich learning experience for both Avni and me. We have learned to plan, organize and execute an event. Of course, we made some errors and will make sure that we do not repeat it in our next event but the learning experience has been very valuable. Right from planning how much and how many varieties of baked goods to thinking of presentation and selling the goods, along with wrapping up the event with counting and calculating what we collected has been such an awesome experience. This hands-on experience will help us to transfer the skills we learned to different projects and activities we undertake later. We urge all youth to engage in activities to collect for this noble cause. We want all to know that this is an amazing opportunity that we are privileged to receive that allows us to make a difference, in whatever small way we can. There is no minimum amount that we need to raise, but we as a team did have a goal in mind. The guidance that we received from the VT Seva team members is also extremely valuable and we are so thankful for all the help. So, please consider participating in this cause and let us try and raise money so that no child goes to sleep hungry.
