There was overwhelming support from enthusiastic volunteers who came forward to support in the areas of Planning, Set-up of Stalls, Cooking Equipment, Cooking, Serving & Distribution, Cash Register, Crowd Management, Safety & Security, Photography, Parking, Wrap up and cleanup. This event was very well received by the Liberty Park community and everyone pitched in with their contributions either through volunteering or through their contributions to buy food from the stalls. The response to the event really surprised everyone since it was a festive atmosphere throughout the subdivision. An estimated 300 people attended the outdoor event. This was a great opportunity to come outdoors, have a safe & delicious food made on the spot and contribute towards a great cause. We were able to raise enough money to support 10 children in total to benefit Nethra Vidhyalaya & Tribal School children with the support of great friends, family & LP community. Krishna ji, HOA lead and our hosts - Divya ji & Venkat ji, Liberty Park Residents, were extremely gracious to provide their Driveway to set up the Donation Stations, Tents and Food Stations. Their neighbors were also so kind to lend their driveways as well for any spillover stations, storage, etc. The entire Liberty Park community extended their helping hand so amazingly and embraced the event to make it their own. In the run-up to the event, Liberty Park Subdivision HOA and VT Seva Team met several times to discuss the logistics, supplies, location, volunteers, Safety precautions and menu items for the Food Stall. These pre-planning meetings were very important to ensure all the above aspects and much more are taken care within the community and the event location. There was a variety of food options – Plain Dosa, Podi Dosa, Onion Dosa, Pesaratu & Upma Dosa, Ghee Dosa, Cheese Dosa, Pongal, Kesari, Coffee, Masala Chai & Samosa. The Dosas were served with hot Sambar and Chutney as well. All the food items were sold out by 4:30 PM. At the conclusion of the event, every individual specially encouraged us to have this kind of an event every year and that they were eagerly waiting for the next one to happen soon! Given this was our first time at the food bank, we were given a tour of the facility by the manager. Everyone was amazed by the vast storage room with endless boxes of food piled high. Everything was organized and packaged very neatly making it clear they have an impressive system for keeping track of the supplies. Afterwards, we were led down to the packaging room where diligent volunteers were already at work. We were impressed by the dedication of the volunteers and the managers of the food bank. For our task that day everyone worked together in an assembly line to prepare family meal boxes for those in need of assistance. Each volunteer was in charge of one or two food items to the box and passed it along the conveyor belt to the next person. From adding food items to the boxes, unpacking large quantities of food, and lifting heavy boxes, everyone had a job to do. Two volunteers at the end of the line sealed the boxes and stacked them four boxes high so they could be sent to other locations to be distributed. The family meal boxes included milk, juice, rice, pasta, beans, peanut butter, granola bars, canned fruit and veggies, and more. We put together 13,980 meals for families with a total weight of 15,600 pounds. We all enjoyed volunteering at the Greater Boston Food Bank and can’t wait to come back soon!
