  • Sucessful 3rd Annual Public Speaking Event - VT Seva Detroit

VT Seva Detroit conducted the 3rd Annual Public Speaking event on Sunday August 09, 2020. This year it was little bit different with hosting a workshop (inplace of a competition) by the experienced ToastMasters and a session for Guidelines on Remote Learning to acclimate the current pandemic situation. “ Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek ” – Barrack Obama . One of the appropriate quote for the current situation. By participanting in this event students received information and resources that needed for remote schooling and acquiring the crucial skill that they need for their life “Public Speaking”. Many thanks to Gaurav Talwar , Surya Machetti and Lorrie Williams for their time and sharing their expertise with the students. Awesome presentations by 3 of them. Timekeeping is the challenging task for any event, thanks to Jaisankar Kannan for being our time keeper and make sure we were on track. In this workshop, students were able to present their prepared speech and get an individualized feedback from the experts. Registration Fee from this event went to NethraVidyala school. We are proud to announce that with the registration fees and additional sponsorship we were able to sponsor one students’ education for one whole year. • Ford CEO Visited VT Seva Detroit 2021 Soccer Tournament

2021 VT SEVA DETROIT: SOCCER FOR A CAUSE We had a very successful 1st VT Seva Detroit Soccer Tournament back in 2019. But 2020 proved to be a real disappointment with the extended hiatus. Nevertheless, it was time to dust off the cleats and get onto the field once again in 2021!! VT Seva Detroit organized a boarded indoor fundraising soccer tournament at Total Sports Novi (East), MI on July 18th 2021 to benefit the blind and visually challenged children in India. Like past years we had 3 different groups: - Group 1: 6 to 9 years’ old - Group 2: 10 to 13 years’ old - Group 3: 14 and above We had around 40 registrants until a week before the event and the organizing team was still struggling to make up teams. Then in the last week, we had 2 Adult teams registering and several more eagerly registered to complete 67 registrations in total. During the run-up to the event, VT Seva Detroit Team members were ‘all guns blazing’ in all departments. To list a few: Promotions – Our Youth & Adult Volunteers did an amazing job in promoting the event. Apart from reaching out to the past participants via email, phone, and voicemails and new participants via distribution list and MIindia, we had several outreach sessions at Total Sports Novi, Vani Foods, India Grocers, Sai Grocers – Farmington and Novi and also pasted Flyers at different important locations throughout. You can view more pictures from the Event Promotions here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/mUVeM4mFh3V3V7Tp9 Volunteers who participated in the promotion events: Event Sponsors – Sudhakar ji , our own VT Seva Senior Adviser/Mentor & Vidhya ji of Vani Foods were so kind enough to Sponsor the Venue, Medals and Trophies. Sudhakar ji has always blessed our VT Seva Detroit team with their constant support & encouragement by physically volunteering in-person & financially Sponsoring several events regularly throughout the years. Vijitha ji of Vani Foods came forward to Sponsor after listening to the great cause this event was being conducted for. She also graciously offered us her Storefront Parking Lot for any future VT Seva Events. Thank you so much Vijitha ji! Venue - Total Sports – It would be an injustice if we don’t mention Bryan Bartig, Total Sports Facilities Manager, and his associate Michelle. They were simply amazing and without their help and support, it would not have been possible. Right from when we decided to go for our 1st in-person sports event after the long break, Bryan and the team were so appreciative of the cause and promised to go all the way to help us organize this. The earlier managers were no longer working at TS hence we had to work with the new team all over again. They not only subsidized the Venue fees for us but went above & beyond to help us so easily organize the logistics. Food Sponsors/Coordinators – What more could have one asked for during the break time at the Food Stall with mouth-watering delicacies: - Mint Rice, BisibelaBath, Chocolate Cake, Samosas, Pizzas, Mango Lassi, Masala Chai, Ice Cream, etc. beckoned the participants, visitors and volunteers to have lunch, snack & dessert at a very nominal price. Thank you so much to Nandhini ji, Asha ji, Veena ji, Jyoti ji, Vanitha ji & all the food stall volunteers who provided us with amazing food and beverages. All the proceeds from the food stall also went to Nethra Vidyalaya Schools. Event Volunteers - We had over 35 Youth & Adult Volunteers working enthusiastically in different departments during the event. Right from the setting up of desks & chairs for check-in, arranging the food items, coolers, putting up banners, Café price tags, setting up soccer cones/nets for the younger kid’s games, ensuring the players are on the right teams, Photography and clean up. Referees - Our in-house referees Darshan ji and Abhinav are the coolest!! We can always depend on them to referee the games every year and they both oblige us without even a second thought. Special thank you to both of you! Teams & Winners – We had an amazing Game Roster and Schedule this year with several first time youth players, two new High School Teams, and two new Adult League Teams from Utica. Group 1 (6 to 9 years’ old): Had 10 players that were placed in 2 different teams Yellow & Green to verse against each other in there 10 min. games. The kids had super fun time playing and scoring against each other in a friendly competitive kids Soccer game. Group 2 (10 to 13 years’ old): Twelve players were matched up against each other depending on their different skill levels in Red vs Blue teams. Superb demonstration of soccer skills amongst the players made up for an interesting three 15 min. sections of the game. All players from Group 1 & 2 received Medals and Trophies for their fantastic performance on the field. Group 3 (14 and above): The second half of the day became more intense with the Group 3 games. 2 Adults team, 2 High School Teams and 2 League Teams faced off against each other in the group matches. All the games were high energy games with friendly competition between each other. Final: OHWTF #1 Vs. OHWTF#2 Winners were OHWTF #2 Special Mention – We had one energetic person who stood out and acted as an inspiration to forming All Women Soccer team for next year’s event. It was none other than Zahara ji . She was the only Adult Female Player who took part in the Soccer Games and what an amazing Defender she was!!! Special Surprise Guest – We had a super surprise special Guest during our 2nd Soccer Event. It was none other than Ford Motors CEO – Mr. Jim Farley, who happened to be there. He was gracious enough to talk to us regarding our Organization, Cause and the Event. He congratulated all of us and gave a Photo opportunity as well!! Guest of Honor – Our guest of honor Sudhakar ji, was kind enough to stay for the entire event and present the Trophies and Medals to the participants. He has always been our mentor, core volunteer and key adviser for all the events. Treasurer, National Secretary & Detroit Director – Our driving force have always been Anand ji, Sudheer ji and Srinath ji who have become the three pillars of VT Seva Detroit branch without whom any event will not be a success and so was Soccer. Right from idea initiation to clean-up and wrap-up, these three individuals have been a constant force of strength and support. WAY TO GO & THANK YOU SO MUCH!! Volunteering Coordinator/Game & Event Coordinators – Vanitha - Volunteering coordinator & Venkat & Suresh - Game & Event Coordinators – like in 2019, the coordinators met frequently during the run-up to the event, burnt the mid-night oil, extreme planning and execution till the end. Detroit Communications – Nandini, for her support in publishing content provided by event leads in all our Social media channels ( Youtube, Whatsapp, Facebook, VTSworld Blogs, and Event logs) from start to the completion of the event. In the end, it turned out to be a fruitful success for the hours of preparation that was put in. • Battle Against Cancer - News

More Women Healthcare Camp Videos Big News - Revolutionizing the Women Health Care (Prevention and Early detection of Cancer) and multiplying the positive impact Taking inspiration from the women health camps conducted by VT Seva's sister organization in India - Vikasa Tarangini Mahila Arogya Vikas for past decade impacting close to a million women through 900 camps for free, a Government Order (G.O) got issued by Telangana State Minister of Labour, Employment,Women and Child Development Mr. Malla Reddy on 3rd June 2019, Monday, 10 AM in Sriramnagar (Muchintal, Shamshabad) in presence of the VT women health camp visionary and humanitarian Sri Chinna Jeeyar Swamiji, Government Secretaries and honorable officers. This Government Order (GO) enables Vikasa Tarangini Mahila Arogya Vikas, Telangana State Government, Women and Child Welfare Ministry to collaborate and conduct health camps all over the state of Telangana, multiplying the positive impact of saving lives. All the VT leaders and volunteers of VT Mahila Arogya Vikas were invited to this great milestone. It is a proud moment for VT Seva as we have been supporting close to 100 women health camps every year and have recently sponsored Mobile Diagnostic bus and 3 Digital Colposcopes (PayPal grant) to aid our camps. Challenge If the women are healthy then the whole family will be safe and the society will flourish. In India, one in ten cancer related deaths are cervical, we want to identify these in early stages and improve chances of survival and give women a second chance to lead happy life. In India, out of all the cancer diagnoses, 22.86 percent are cervical cancer cases. Rural women are at higher risk for undetected cervical cancer because of the stigma that is prevalent in villages about seeking medical help concerning women’s health. Objectives Early detection of cervical cancer among women who are marginalized because of poverty. Providing required assistance to direct detected cancer cases for further medical or surgical procedures. Awareness programs about women’s health and wellness. Education programs to self-identify signs and symptoms for different types of cancers. Approach Step-1: We start with door-to-door canvasing to bring awareness on health, hygiene, during interactions, we will make sure not to use “Cancer” as people tend to shy away and get scared to divulge personal details. During the survey process, our volunteers assess the health of the person and advise them to attend a FREE Medical camp going to be conducted nearby their residence. Duration of the survey depends on the number of families living in that neighborhood, it may take a week to complete the Survey. We schedule the surveys in such a time that, women are available to talk and open-up to answer questions about their personal health conditions. By the end of this step, we have good understanding of how many women should undergo screening and how we should get ready for the Medical Camp. Step-2: Our team of volunteers include Doctors; Para medical staff and support staff. Often we partner with local doctors, pharmacies to augment our volunteers. We have a defined methodology in conducting the camp. Women, that participated in survey (Step-1) bring their registration sheets, basic examination is followed by colposcopy and VIA tests; Women are shown reports then and their using monitors. Consultation and medicines are provided as required. We handhold them throughout the process– including further diagnosis if required. Beneficiaries In India, out of all the cancer diagnoses, 22.86 percent are cervical cancer cases. Rural women are at higher risk for undetected cervical cancer because of the stigma that is prevalent in villages about seeking medical help concerning women’s health. Many women lack awareness about regular checkup and menstrual hygiene. As many of them are illiterate, what they see what they believe. That is why, using digital colposcope customized by our organization, we show them the cervix on a monitor while performing the cervical examination. Unique experience and expertise makes us best positioned to meet the objective. We have started this project in 2007, we have raised awareness to 946,908 people , conducted 952 women health camps successfully, i.e. close to 80 camps every year. On average, each survey brings awareness to 1000 women and each camp screens 150 women. 228,469 women have taken Cervical Cancer screening tests (with Colposcope) since then and 6325 had biopsy tests. 483 women were survived with early detection of Cervical Cancer and 215 with breast surgeries; This has brought change in lives of thousands of families. Majority of them are below the poverty line. It gives immense satisfaction when they speak about their recovery. We have documented case studies of many beneficiaries and testimonials are available on our website in form of videos and reports. Our Team and Collaboration Our team of volunteers include Doctors; Para medical staff and support staff. Often we partner with local doctors, pharmacies to augment our volunteers. We collaborate with “Anganwadi workers” to conduct survey and medical camp in their area. Indian Government has developed an Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) scheme in 1975 to curb the high infant and maternal mortality, under this scheme a trained person is allotted for every 1000 people, This Anganwadi person is responsible for bridging the gap between individuals and organized Health care. There are 2 Million Anganwadi workers who has access to 70 Million India population that need either one or the other type of medical support. These are most important and often ignored essential ink of Indian Health Care. We leverage them to the core and support them in improving their area. They play very active role in taking us to the people. Going with them gives confidence for the people of that area to share their health problems openly. We also collaborate with local leaders who has through understanding of their community who need health services. We collaborate with Govt and Private Doctors to support us during camps; We involve local pharma drug stores to secure medicines and clinical equipment. We work with corporates, Multi-National companies, some business units, project teams participate in conducting camps as part of their outreach / CSR activities. Summary In summary, we reaching the masses is the key, if you don’t reach them they don’t bother to take care of themselves; If we don’t address it in early stages we reduce chances of survival rate; Detecting and addressing the problems early will make more families happy and makes whole society happy. Contributing to a happy society is what we want to achieve. This is where our organization plays key role in using digital colposcopes and customizing them for clear examination of cervix and detecting abnormal conditions in early stages. Join US VT Seva conducts annual Cancer Awareness Walkathons/Runs throughout US to support local communities and also to raise funds for sponsoring an average of 100 women health camps in India per year, mobile diagnostic bus, procuring medical equipment such as digital colposcopes and medicines. We have great support from local communities in US where thousands of people, especially youngsters, oncologists, socially responsible corporations such as NVidia, LinkedIn, Boston Scientific, PayPal in enabling us to save lives. You can sponsor a camp by clicking here . With a donation of $500, you can organize a camp in your village or town. Depending on the number of people attending camp, medicines required and number of staff engaged, the camp may cost $1000 or more.

  • VT Seva Detroit Youth Board Waste Water Treatment Plant Tour

‘’The way to bring about change is to be proactive and active ‘’ - Octavia Spencer The VT Seva Detroit Youth Board conducted its first waste water treatment plant tour in Ann Arbor, MI on 4/16/2023 with 25 youth and adult volunteers participating. It was such an interesting and eye-opening tour about what it takes to treat water that we consume and waste every day and the resources it takes to run the facility and amount of water that's treated each day. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝟏𝟖𝟎,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝟏𝟖 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐠𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐚 𝐝𝐚𝐲! Kyle , who is the supervisor there, guided the tour of a facility. He explained the full process very well and answered all of our questions clearly. It was amazing to see how waste water becomes clean water again. The whole process takes over 24 hours. After the tour, Kyle presented a slide show and went over more of the technical details. A huge thanks to Kyle and Ann Arbor Water Treatment Plant for giving us this opportunity! This tour did leave an impact on each one of us about how much water gets wasted every day and how many resources are needed to clean it again. Everyone who participated decided to make a change in their everyday routine to consume water more consciously. Youth Volunteer Reflections: I will not flush any disposable wipes as it will increase the amount of solids in the waste water. I will also not let water running when washing my hands, cleaning bowls, taking a bath (will not bathing for a long time), and not wasting water in general. I will also tell my friends about this and limit the water usage! – Deekshitha Ravu I will change myself by limiting the water usage whenever I am taking a bath. – Hajanthan Muhinthan I will try to take shorter showers to reserve water - Hrudya Kishore One thing that we should change is to avoid polluting the water and dumping waste into it. We need to use biodegradable and eco-friendly things. – Nidhi Rao I will take shorter showers to save water and reduce wastage – Oviya Jaisankar I was able to see a real world example of all 3 forms of science(chemistry, biology, and physics) and how they work in order to clean the water we use. I was able to take away that we need to be more mindful of what we put down our drains, as the smallest things can make the biggest impact in terms of sustainability. – Rishi Adduri I learned today is that we should use wet wipes because they aren't really biodegradable and will stop using them – Shruthi Adduri I would make sure to limit the amount of water I use. – Vahini One thing I will change is not disposing anything that I think is not biodegradable and may affect the wastewater treatment process, such as wipes. – Varshan Muhinthan I will try to be more conscious in daily my water use, like taking shorter showers and not leaving on the water when brushing my teeth. - Veeksha *************************** One of our parent volunteer Mr. Ranga Rao, captured all the technicalities in detail, so that any one can understand the process Wastewater Treatment. It is a process to remove waste materials from the wastewater (household, industrial and commercial), and the clean water can be used or returned into the regular water cycle. Whatever the waste removed from the sewage can be sent to landfill or the waste handling storage facility. This process involves multiple stages: 1. Bar screening. It is a preliminary level of filtration, being installed at the influent to a wastewater treatment plant. The simplest bar screens only have vertical bars that let water pass through while stopping big objects. It is a filtration process used to remove large objects, such as cloths, diapers, wipes and big metals and plastics from wastewater. 2. Grit chambers. Grit chambers are long narrow tanks that are designed to slow down the flow so that solids such as sand, coffee grounds, and eggshells will settle out of the water. Settled down solid material can be removed easily. 3. Primary clarification. It is a physical treatment process of removing solids, oil and grease materials before biological treatment. After the grit chamber process, water enters the clarifier tank and floatable solids (scum) are removed from the surface by skimmers while settleable solids (sludge) are collected on the bottom by a rake and removed via a sludge removal system. 4. Secondary treatment. This process is performed by Bacteria and Protozoa in a managed aerobic or anaerobic process depending on the treatment technology. Bacteria and Protozoa consume biodegradable soluble organic contaminants (e.g., sugars, fats, and organic short-chain carbon molecules from human waste, food waste) from the sewage water. In this process air is pumped into the water. 5. Disinfection of Wastewater. Ultraviolet light (UV), Chlorination, Ozone, and Chloramines are primary methods for disinfection of wastewater. UV light irradiation of wastewater would change the microorganism's DNA and they will not produce any harmful chemicals. After the UV light treatment, water can be safely released into the rivers. • Novi Police Department Appreciation Lunch

VT Seva Detroit 2023: Novi Police Department Appreciation Lunch followed by Tour of the facility "Law enforcement officers are never 'off duty.' They are dedicated public servants who are sworn to protect public safety at any time and place that the peace is threatened. They need all the help that they can get." In order to commemorate the National Police Week, during May 15 – May 22, VT Seva Detroit organized a Police Appreciation lunch with a meet & greet and a short tour of the Novi Police Department on May 13th, 2023. VT Seva has always appreciated America’s law enforcement departments in keeping us safe and their endless sacrifices to protect our community. Officer Meyer & Officer Jusino welcomed us warmly and thanked us for the appreciation lunch we provided for them. As a token of appreciation, VT Seva Detroit also handed a ‘Plaque’ and appreciation ‘Thank You’ framed poster to the officers as well as Statue of Equality Memento. In turn, both the officers were appreciative of VT Seva’s community services and all the activities we do to uplift the needy people locally and internationally. Right after that we began the tour of the facility with Officer Meyer leading our way and Officer Jusino backing us up to ensure that all of us are in the group throughout the tour. They walked us through the holding cells, arraignment area, dispatcher area, Sergeant’s office, Lieutenant’s office, Briefing area, Conference Room, Parking area, Garage for repairs, Training room, Records area, Officer Cubicles, Mailrooms, Gym, and Lunch area. The officers were so kind to explain various areas of functions within their department right from the Records Clerk to Dispatch, Sergeant Training Camps, Detectives, School Resource officers, SONIC, DEA, Traffic and On-the-road officers, Property officers and much more. Our Youth and Adult Volunteers had many AMAZING questions for the officer regarding the Police department’s public relations with the community, law enforcement methods, the equipment and firearms the officers carry, what it takes to be a Police Officer, how the officers determine their reactions to adverse situations, various promotional opportunities to move up the ranks in their department, difference between State and City Police departments, their Benefits and Pay, and so many more interesting topics of discussion that gave us all a broad understanding of how the department works and how much it takes to keep all of us safe and sound. We had great participation today from VT Seva Detroit. Couple of our Youth volunteers explained all the activities and community services we do to benefit the underprivileged people locally and internationally. Both the officers admired the fantastic efforts of our organization. These are our volunteers who attended Youth: Amogh Mavatoor, Rishabh Mavatoor, Yathi Shekar Debbata, Hajanthan Muhinthan, Aditi Jethri, Abisrishti Ram, Jishnu Kandalam, Sohan Kancharla, Nikhil Aerabati, Rakshan Samynathan, Nemish Debbata, Sathvik TirumalaKanduri. All in all, it was a very enriching experience for all of us to gain the knowledge of the operational activities of the 75 personnel strong Novi Police department that has been protecting our city since its inception in 1954. VT Seva Detroit sincerely thanks the Novi Police Department for providing us with this great opportunity. We all owe them a debt of gratitude, so let’s make sure we take time out of our day-to-day lives to recognize their efforts and give back however we can! WE SALUTE OUR BRAVE POLICE OFFICERS. Project Story Time Project Storytime is an initiative taken to spread morally valuable and entertaining stories and make them easily accessible for our community, especially the youth. The idea is that people can suggest, record, or write their own stories and share them with us, which we will then group and filter. We will then make our collection available to everyone, which will have stories in different languages and from different cultures. This project, once it becomes widespread, will be able to help a lot of people, starting with those recording the stories (increases confidence and encourages creativity) and those listening to the stories (positively impacted by the good messages our stories send while having fun). There are many different roles that everyone can take part of in this project, sending us your own stories being the most fruitful and easiest way to contribute! We will also be recording sample stories and ones written by others, advertising our project, filtering the stories, compiling them into one easily-accessible place, reaching out to others to guide them through the process, and many more! Please reach out to projectstorytimevts@gmail.com with your story ideas or if you would like to volunteer to lend your voice! Thank you!
